Yummy yummy! Although what's with the vinegary aroma? You gotta love it when the mailman brings something this fabulous! Looks like I get to get started on the hoodie. I may actually start with a swatch -- I know, I must be coming down with something. We'll see :)

My red sweater is ready for trick-or-treaters.

I've been making progress since the frogging incident and sticking to the (recalculated) plan. The thing is, I have no idea if this is going to turn out to be the garment I'm imagining. I don't think I'll know until it's all done and I can try it on.

It's rolling quite a bit at the picot hem. (See how the candy is holding it down?) It worries me a bit, but it did flatten out when I blocked my swatch, so it'll flatten when I block this. Right? I guess if it doesn't, I can undo the hem and add ribbing instead.

wow, knitting with my sweater yarn is WAY different than knitting lace! i mean, the sheer number of inches i can add in one evening is blowing my mind—thanks to size 8 needles and worsted weight yarn. it's not better than lace knitting; just different, and i am appreciating it!

cables look SO soft and cushy in this yarn. i like how fast this project is moving, but i have to say that it is not my favorite weight of sweater. one of these is enough, i think. i really prefer a DK or fingering weight yarn for bith working on and for wearing. i'd rather have two lightweight sweaters on than one heavy one. but this is a great piece to use as outerwear—how cheerful will this look with a snowy background?

Ooh, red

I've been spending nearly all of my knitting time working on my red sweater. I just knew I should have finished up that second sock first. I knew it. Ah well. The sock is now in my office, so hopefully I'll get a needle's worth of knitting in now and again during the day. But you don't really care about that... You're here to hear about my red sweater.

It's coming along famously. Finished up another ball of yarn, put the sleeve stitches on waste yarn, and have knit a couple inches down the body. Isn't it fun what paired increases can do? Circular knitting magic, and raglan sleeves!

Everyday Cardigan

I've been moving along on my red Everyday Cardigan pattern. I'm stuck on sleeve island, but it's moving along. I just love that I am knitting it in a dark red. As we know there are so many reds out there and each has its charms. You can see the back of the sweater from an earlier pic.

finally i am off to the races with this luxurious red yarn—mmmm. it will have a cabled band at the hem, cables up the side seams and raglan seams, and around the neck. everywhere else—simply stockinette. the perfect foil for all that deep texture.


the cable is the totem cable from the vogue stitchionary 2; part of one of the combination cables that i separated out for use on its own.

i am employing annie modisett's technique for cabling on the needles, but i'm not sure i like the way they look yet; some of the stitches look stretched and some look tight. hence i find myself switching back to using the third stick for the cables, which actually seems equally fast, so i may continue with that, since the stitches look more even to me when i use it.

it's nice to be working on size 8 needles with big yarn! the cabled hem is knit on a smaller needle which is a bit hard on the hands—still, not as agonizing as jo's hem, and well worth it.

but that's not saying i am not looking forward to the stockinette . . .

I'm WORKING on it, OK?

Really, I do want to get further into this KAL. I cast on the stitches for the body of the Alice Starmore Eriskay - oh, days ago. It's just that it takes so lo-o-o-ng to get around even one row. 290 stitches is kind of daunting when you're working with US size 1 needles and very very fine cashmere yarn.

I managed another whole row today while having coffee in Killarney (you can read about all that on my weblog) and maybe by the end of next week I'll actually be able to see that I am knitting the rib of a sweater and not just playing silly beggars with a length of thin wire.

Look, if the Yarn Harlot can make such a stunning shawl under such pressure, then I. CAN. FINISH. THIS. SWEATER. can't i?

i'm red-faced

nuthin' like going off to the wool show and then disappearing for over a week, eh?
not that i'm caught up yet since returning home, but at least no one is in the office today, and my time is more my own.

i have a luscious batch of malabrigo merino that i had slated for a turtleneck as my first red sweater. it is so beautifully cushy that i was determined to find the right pattern for it.



i wanted something simple (since it is a fairly large-gauge yarn), but with some fab cable extravagence.

i swatched and swatched. i had been thinking that a large cable along the raglan seams against a field of a small knit-purl pattern would be great. however, the texture-on-texture thing just would not work out. i couldn't find the right scale in the (numerous) stitches i tried.



so guess what? i tried stockinette, and that was the winner—who knew? looks like it is going to be a big fab cable on top of stockinette. the hem and turtleneck will be cabled, as well as the sideseams and raglan seams. plenty going on—the stockinette will be a rest, not a bore.

Now I Am Ready!

This is the beautiful viscose yarn that Jo sent to me and now it is all balled up and ready to go. I am afraid the photo does not do the yarn justice. It is a beautiful rich red with copper and blue/mauve running through it.





I had a few patterns in mind, but every once in a while, I dig out some of my knitting books and take them to look at in bed - lo and behold, this is the pattern I am going to knit. I have a nice sleeveless black dress that it will be perfect over for the holiday season. Also, it would look great with a camisole and black skirt or trousers. I do have three projects on the go just now and one is almost complete, so when it is, the Red Sweater is next on the needles! The pattern is in "Knit It Your Way" by Cynthia Yanok Wise. The nice part of the book is that new it cost $46.99 and I got it at a second hand bookstore for $14.49!

Eeeek! There's a FROG in my house!

So there I am, happily knitting and feeling pretty good about the pattern I’d written for myself. Until it begins to dawn on me that I’ve actually made something of a miscalculation. Grrrr. But I bear up, re-calculate and assess the effect of the error so far. I decide (foolishly, in retrospect) that I can fix it without tearing back. So I barrel on. And on. I go on far enough, in fact, to the point where there is just no denying that I’m actually exacerbating the problem. Hence the frogging.
I’m not giving up mind you. I’ve got the acceptable early bit back on the needles and I’m initializing the do-over sequence.

Thank you, Red Sweater KAL. If not for you I might think maybe this yarn wants to be something else. But that would be wrong. Because the fault, dear Brutus, is not in the yarn, but in myself.

Pattern...and second sweater...

Finally dug up the pattern I was looking for yesterday. I just love the way this pattern looks and the design up the front. The gauge is right...so, this will be my new red sweater.

Plus, I found a sweater that I still had on needles - the sleeves anyway - and it is a red yarn with some specks of white in it...have no idea what the yarn is as there are no labels with the sweater - but, I want to finish it and get it ready to wear. So, hopefully, there will be two red sweaters. Do visit my blog!

Introduction

Hi, I just joined and thought I would introduce myself. I have a blog over at HeatherKnits, which is only a few months old, but I have been knitting for ages.

I have lots of unfinished sweaters, one of which is red, so I figured some support from this blog might motivate me to get it done - if the recent drop in temperature doesn't!

Red gable progress

I’m making progress on my red Green Gable sweater. It’s hard to tell in this photo, but it really is big enough to go over my head. I’m knitting along (so far) on twenty-four inch circulars, so the knitting’s rather squished. At least, I hope it’ll go over my head. I have the right number of stitches, and I’m getting the right gauge, so it should.

Right?

Either way, the sheep are having fun. Weeeee!

Have Yarn...Searching for pattern...

Ready to begin a new sweater...that is the exciting part...found a gorgeous red yarn...Cascade 220 - 100% Peruvian Highland Wool in Xmas Red. Now how can I go wrong with that color???

Now to find the perfect pattern...I have it in my bookcase - just need to get it out and begin work...Thanks for letting me join all of you...Photos this week!!!

A finished red sweater AND a red hat?

How can this be? Especially since the yarn for the red hoodie has not been purchased yet??? (see this post) Well, when you are making an outfit for a cork, it's not too difficult to finish it in one sitting :) I give you, Korknisse. So yes, by technicality a finished red sweater (and hat) although I am not counting it towards my sweater project for the KAL. I had happened across this pattern yesterday, had finished the red square in the block that I am finishing up for little miss and had used a bottle of wine for/with dinner yesterday so I had a cork (albeit a red one) ready to go. It was as though the stars had aligned. I will probably end up purchasing the Malabrigo online for the hoodie, I'll let you know. Happy knitting!

Red Sweater KAL

I finally finished the Rogue sweater, got the pattern for Eris and decided on the yarn for Eris. I have decided on using Araucania Nature wool. I found it on sale. I will be ording it in a bit. So hopefully I can start on Eris early next week.

I wore my Rogue sweater yesterday and was immediately commissioned to make one for a girl I work with. She wants even the same color. She doesn't care what the cost is. So I will be working on 2 sweaters at once.

A body to match my sleeves!

I can't believe how FAST this sweater is knitting up :-)

We are just coming into summer here in Aus, so I'm trying to get it finished pretty soon, before it gets too hot to knit (and try on!) a sweater this thick! Laura made a comment about wearing just the sleeves around the house....oh yeah, done that!...in fact, last night it was the sleeves AND the body, which was fine until we turned the air con off!!!!!

I'm Swatching

My scheduled trip to the yarn pusher, I mean, store was delayed by a flat tire. But I got there eventually and was successful on my quest for lovely red yarn.

First, I checked the sale section. I saw some yummy, red FDC Country Cashmere at half price. I was tempted, boy howdy, was I tempted. But I wasn't there for bulky and I moved on.

However, if anyone is interested in discounted Country Cashmere, check this out.

My ultimate selection was a bit of a splurge, but I do love it.

My Project Has a Name!

I don't know if the rest of you tend to name your projects, but I do. I am officially naming my project for this KAL "The Monstrosity."

After a bit of procrastination I decided on a vest rather than a sweater. The Manos del Uruguay seems too heavy for a pullover and I'm not much of a cardigan gal, so a vest sounded like a good idea. I've not only never knit a vest ... I've never even worn one!

I've now begun the vest and frogged it four times and I've finally come to the conclusion that I just don't really like the Manos. I love the idea of it and it's lovely in the skein, but I'm just not a fan of thick-and-thin yarns. No matter what I try with it, it just looks sloppy to me.

Everytime I check this site and see all of your wonderful plans for your red sweater projects, I just look at the bag of Manos sitting next to my knitting chair and I have an overwhelming urge to drop-kick it off my balcony.

But hey, I'm stubborn. I will proceed with the Manos vest. Maybe I'll surprise myself and end up liking the handcrafted (cough, cough) look of it.

Bummers

I finished up my Mountain Peaks shawl yesterday, and blocked it today. As a reward I swatched my merino. The pattern I was going to use for it—notice the past tense there—Green Gables, just won't work at all. The gauge is all wrong for my yarn. If I use size 6 needles, as called for, I get a totally different stitch count. I don't wear the largest size, but going down a sweater size won't work. The measurements are still too far off. If I go down a needle size, the gauge is still wonky for that sweater.

I guess I need to find a different sweater to make out of my pretty red merino. Blah.

By the way, with all you lucky people at Rhinebeck, it's been totally quiet around here!

I have red sleeves!

I just wanted to say Hi!

I started this sweater last week, and was really pleased to find this KAL to help keep me motivated! The yarn is Katia Himalaya, and the pattern is the basic long sleeved raglan from Elizabeth Zimmermann's Knitting Workshop. I bought the yarn with the intention of using it in this blanket, but decided that it felt much too nice not to be worn. It's knitting up beautifully fast, so fingers crossed, it shouldn't take heaps long :-)

Anne, I'll go for December 1 because that's the date I start decorating my house to death with festive greenery (and reddery) for the holiday season, so it's a real red-letter day for me.

Red Branch Kni(gh)ts will be a one-off skein of my composed designer yarn, specially created for this KAL—as well as wordplaying on Red and Knits it will commemorate one of Ireland's ancient legends, that of the Red Branch Knights, a band of warriors who drank and feasted and laughed and loved and fought quite a bit. Outside the door of their feasting hall was a tall branch with bells on it which shook whenever enemies were close by, whereupon the knights came pouring out to do battle.

A bit like King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table but more red-blooded really, since Arthur & Co. believed in courtly love (where you put your goddess on a pedestal and admired her from afar) and the RBK were more inclined to throw her over the saddlebow and carry her off to a sheepskin rug by a warm fire...

The yarn will have everything from ribbon to glitter, handspun to homespun, eyelash to mohair, in reds of course but also golds, emeralds, and all the colours that evoke the glamour of a bygone age. 100g, c. 160 metres, it will make a scarf or small shawl that stops even winter traffic.

Oh good, I actually have the red yarn and the pattern for it, that's a first! Here's a picture, it's from Vogue. The yarn Brown Sheep Burly Spun. The picture is a brick red, but my yarn is a more true red. This will be fun! To match my bella Quadifoglio!

The girl likes red...

The girl likes red.... but if you ask my boys they will say my favorite color is yellow. But red is to wear, to feel good in, to look great in, to feel sexy in no matter your age. Here are a few of my favorite reds, a pair of Via Spiga "got to have" red suede boots that my husband will never know their price, a pair of red Liberty Botins, because what's a good pair of jeans without something red to wear with them, a pair of Sheep Birkis, well because they have sheep on them, my favorite (so far) red shawl that I knit, and of course a bottle of Cabernet because who would not choose that as a favorite red? Oh, and I forgot the red pedicure, which is a week old, but still looking pretty good if I do say so myself.

So what is the yarn? It is a ball of beautiful Australian wool that is going to be knit into a red swing coat. I've got 2 rows on the needles, so I'm up and running in this knit along. Thanks for including me Anne!

Oh - if you are wondering what the white is in the background, it is snow. What would October be in Colorado without a little Halloween snow, though I guess Mother Nature blew it by 2 weeks. Happy knitting!

I have my red yarn now :)

The Yarn Demons got a hold of me today and drove me into a yarn shop on my way to run some errands. It's absolute insanity that I should actually buy yarn when I live amidst hundreds and hundreds of pounds of my own Fearless Fibers yarn. But alas, the demons are powerful and persuasive and somehow I arrived home with this:



It's Manos del Uruguay wool in a shade of slightly burgundy red (color 66). I also got two skeins in gray (color 31). I still don't know what I'll do for this Red Sweater KAL, but now that I have the yarn in my hot little hands, I'm sure it will come to me soon.

Anne, I hope you ended up with some time this weekend for knitting up your shawl and man lace, and for getting your red sweater mojo back.

Me? I knit furiously on my Mountain Peaks shawl over the weekend so that I can start something new soon. I only have 4 or 5 edging repeats left to knit before I'm free to start swatching for my red sweater. I have my Green Gables pattern out. Hopefully the red yarn I have will work for it. That remains to be seen. I shant swatch for it until I get this shawl done. I know how I am. I want to finish the shawl and I'm afraid that if I stop now to swatch something new that I won't get back to it for ages. Eons even. That simply won't do.

I don't want to re-create the dress. I just want to capture the feeling in a hip-length to tunic-length sweater. And it simply must be RED!

I am a newbie to designing and this project may well go down in flames. But I'm looking forward to sharing how it goes and getting feedback from you guys.

I don't have the yarn yet...that'll happen some time this week.

and what have i done? zippo, nada, nuthin'!
i got stuck working this weekend, so i'm a little behind the pack. but i think i'll be able to begin swatching for my first red sweater by tomorrow evening. by then, i'll definitely have one WIP completely off the needles and blocking, and another one nearing completion.
i should say that i HAVE been looking at a lot of magazines and books, searching for ideas, but no luck there. a design is trying to coalesce in my mind—i have pieces, but not a whole. i need red mojo to visit me in my sleep tonight!

A question for the masses

I was sitting here thinking about sweater patterns and lamenting the loss of little miss' hoodie and then I had a thought. Would the lovely members of the Red Sweater KAL allow me to make a red hoodie for little miss in a large enough size to fully encompass her girth and then some and have that count as a red sweater even though it is not for me? I thought I would post the question to the group and if the consensus is that it would not count I will continue to look for a pattern for either myself or my mom. Either way I am rather excited to use some red. Technically I have some in Deb's brick colorway but I am being stingy and saving that for me. Besides, I don't have enough of it for an actual sweater. Looks like I'll have to purchase some more yarn. Darn! :)

Red Sweater KAL

I made the final decision as to the sweater pattern. I am going to do the Eris cardigan. I am hooked on the Girl From Auntie Patterns. Once I make this sweater and her Celtic cap to go with it. I think I will have made all her cabled patterns. Now for the yarn. I want Cashmere or baby alpaca. Something so dreamy soft and delicious.

As luck would have it, I have plans for a lovely red sweater! I have a whack of heathery red Jo Sharp wool (plundered from the Webs warehouse) which is earmarked for a sweater for my husband. The plan is to adapt (slightly) one of the sweaters in Knitting Emporium, a gansey-like design called "Mirage".



Won't that be nice in red?

I'm hoping to cast on sometime next month, as my plate is a bit full at the moment. For now, I will just enjoy reading about what all of you are working on!

I don't know if it's cheating or not, but I have a sweater that needs to get finished ASAP so I can wear it this winter. I started it for Project Spectrum in March, then it got warm and I didn't want to lug it around. Now it's cooling off and I want to wear it!! I like my sweaters HUGE so it's going to take a while to get it done--especially since I have about a thousand other things I'm doing.

Help! The red sweater KAL has wrapped me in its far reaching tendrils. And, gulp, this will be the first sweater I've made. (I'm not counting a tiny one that's almost finished for the soon-to-be-born granddaughter.)

Man!!! I so don't need another project right now, but I am so smitten with this red sweater idea that I just have to......can you imagine the possiblities????? Texture? Basket weave, cables, plain stockinette. Deep cherry red, blood red, deep wine red, crimson, cranberry, rusty orange red.......I am totally not ready to start, in fact it will have to wait until after Rhinebeck, but i did dye oodles of reds yesterday - I was soooooo inspired! Now we'll let the pattern idea "simmer".....

well, i'm not usually a KAL joiner (they usually have a time limit, and that's just too much pressure!) but after such a lovely invite from anne, how could i say no? (especially since she was kind enough to send me a free pattern... nothing like a little bit of bribery!).
like anne, i've not previously been much of a red-wearer. but my brand new gray streaks (please tell me it gets easier after the first few) might go nicely with a red sweater. and then there's the gloomy, looming scottish winter which is fast approaching...
i bought a cone of cherry-red sock weight yarn with a plan of making a few pairs of great big knee-highs, but as my sock yarn stash is currently larger than i could ever knit in a lifetime, let alone wear, i've decided it might be better suited to a sweater. add in some wool/silk blend mystery yarn that a friend brought back from spain (also initially earmarked for socks), and a plan is starting to form...



i haven't found a pattern that i like yet, so i may be inventing my own (which will be a challenge, as i've only ever knit garments from patterns before).
something like this (excuse the bad drawing!!):


a slightly fitted but comfortable raglan v-neck, basic stockinette, but with a neckband, sleeve trim & sash (to make it look like a wrap-around, almost kimono style cardi) in the wool/silk yarn (maybe with a lace pattern on the trim as well?). obviously it's still in the preparation stages (although i have swatched, for once!) so any suggestions would be appreciated.

Dang Ladies!! You got me suckered in. I think I will join in but can't get my yarn until next week. I will probably do the Seamus (sp) sweater from Knitty.com. By that time I will be finished with my Rogue sweater anyway.

Alice Starmore, You're In For It This Time!

Oh what the heck, I needed a few more knit projects in my life (or should that be projects in my knitting life?) I saw this stunning jacket in Alice Starmore - hang on a moment and I'll go get the book from the library. Wait, I won't be a second.



Sorry, my camera refused to function on the one in the book so I had to borrow one from the Net. Hope nobody minds, but just in case, THIS ISN'T MINE, I DIDN'T DESIGN OR KNIT IT, SOME OTHER FAR CLEVERER PERSON DID. Ok?

It's an extremely ornately patterned gansey from that lovely Hebridean island which gave us the Eriskay Love Lilt ('Bheir me o, horo van o Bheir me o, horo van ee...'). Really must go over there sometime - no excuse except a long drive, a ferry crossing, another long drive, two more ferry crossings... what am I, a wimp?

Anyway, I'm totally into this knitting a red sweater thing and hugs to you two for suggesting it. There is nothing like a good blazing splash of sweater colour to cheer up the gloomiest winter day. Come on everybody else, join in! If I can battle with Starmore's amazing inventions, you can get going too.

Yarn? Ah well yes, I have this cone of just the right red in cashmere. No, stop snarfling, it's a very fine cashmere and I had always thought I'd have to use it quadrupled, but with Starmore I suspect it may be doubled and no more. That girl loves fine yarns (and lots and lots of stitches too, alas...)

Can somebody tell me how to put the right button on my weblog? Or do I just put the title of the KAL in my sidebar? Still a blushing novitiate in the nunnery in so many things (although definitely a shameless trollop in the yarn hunting field).

This is really going to cheer up the months ahead. WAIT A MINUTE! How long do I have? Is this happy knitting along or is it a frenzied rush to the finish line? No fair if Anne is doing one on size 15 needles and chunky wool doubled!

of course, i am NOT ready to begin a red sweat just yet, but i plan to start next week, on a turtleneck in malabrigo. til then, i thought it would be fun to point out some RED SWEATER trivia.

I'll start

I've had this yarn

for years now (we won't go into how many). I bought it for myself as a special present when I turned 40. It's 100% merino wool, and so soft and warm, and knits up like a dream. I knit a yummy cardigan (still needs buttons attached—I have them, they have Viking ships on them) from it. Lovely Nordic cables running up each front, courtesy of Elsepeth Lavold.

I've been wondering what to do with the rest of it ever since. I mean, I know what I want to do... I want a shell to wear under my cardigan. But which one? I think I finally know.

I got this pattern, Green Gable, and I love it. The gauge is close enough that I think it'll work, but I need to swatch it. That'll happen soon. If I make this sweater the plan is to knit it an inch or two longer than what is shown in that photo on the button... I'm not exactly in the midriff showing phase of life any more after all. LOL

Anne and I were chatting a bit the last couple of days about all the glorious red yarn we both have (Anne, me), and the need to turn it into red sweaters, and soon! And we thought it might be fun to do a little knit along.
