It can sometimes be a good sign, particularly with red (which is the color that has the greatest tendency to bleed). Some dyers are so afraid of a vinegar smell in the yarn that they bo overboard in washing it out when in reality, a bit of vinegar even in the final rinse of the yarn will help the color remain fast.
